HELLENIC NATIONAL METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE
OBJECT:
Meteorological Radar Network Development
YEAR:
2004

Brief Description of the Project

The specific project involves the completion and modernization of the existing meteorological information collection network, which consists of meteorological RADARS that constitute internationally a basic equipment for tracking and forecasting the weather conditions, especially in cases where the weather shows characteristics that will possibly create problems in a citizen’s everyday life.

The project aims at integrating the existing network, in order to cover the largest possible part of the country and produce a high-resolution image, instantly resulting in the collection of a bigger volume of meteorological information to be processed, in order to produce, combining with the rest meteorological information collection systems of the HNMS, reliable local forecasts.

All RADARS will be remote controlled by the HNMS, the HAF, and the familiar meteorology office where applicable, and their function will be constantly controlled by the familiar meteorology office and by the HNMS.

The image of the meteorological RADAR, will have a 2x2 km resolution within the whole country and combined with numerical models of a limited area, the satellite images and the Nowcasting System (Olympic Projects), will provide a complete early warning system, the exploitation of which will benefit the local authorities and by extension the citizen.

The project individual objects are the following

  • Supply and installation of three new meteorological Radars in Preveza, Chrissoupolis and Kithira (or in Astypalea).

  • Supply and installation of two data collection and processing Base Stations, where the status of the complete RADAR network will be concentrated at the HNMS and the HAF.

  • Moreover, for the best network function, the RADAR of Ymittos will be transferred and installed in Astypalea (or Lemnos) and the RADAR of Thessalonica will be transferred in a new position.

  • Telecommunication of remote systems with the HNMS and the HAF as well as supply, operation, installation and interconnection of the necessary equipment and IT software.

  • Functional interconnection of all the above sub-systems, to each other, as well as to the existing facilities of the HNMS.

  • Upgrade of four older RADARS (two C-Band and two S-Band) installed in Andravida, Larissa, Thessalonica and Athens (Ymittos).

  • Staff training for the operation and exploitation of the RADAR systems.

  • Infrastructure works such as construction of access roads, connection to power supply, water supply and sewerage networks, and construction of other areas (parking stations etc.) which will be implemented by the staff and charged on HAF.

  • Collateralization in staff safety issues and lightning protection whether this concerns the antenna, radome etc. or the electricity and data cables.
