Space Hellas and UOA are implementing a pilot project for Quantum Key Distribution

Space Hellas, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Optical Communications and Photonics Technology of the UOA, implemented and demonstrated the first pilot application of Quantum Key Distribution technology (QKD), made for a public body in Greece. The pilot application concerned the needs of the Presidency of the Government, took place at its premises, and was related to ensuring communications critical to national security.

QKD technology achieves the production of cryptographic keys and their transmission by means of an optical medium (e.g. fibre optic network) in a way that fully ensures their protection against possible interception operations. The demonstration took place in the context of the European project Open QKD, which aims to widely exploit QKD in various use cases across Europe.

This pioneering action for the Greek area, is fully in line with the national strategy in the field of quantum communications, as expressed by the active participation of Greece in the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (Euro QCI) initiative of the European Commission. It also reinforces numerous Space Hellas actions in innovative technologies in the field of information security, which concern both the expansion and improvement of the cybersecurity services it provides, as well as its participation in relevant research and development projects.
