restructuring of client's LAN environment, phone linking of two company buildings

Brief Description of the Project

The client's LAN comprised two sub-networks: one Token Ring topology and one Fast Ethernet.

This network suffered delays because all of its servers had been placed on the Token Ring (16 Mbps), while the majority of demanding users had been assigned to the Fast Ethernet side (100 Mbps).

To solve the problem of delays, Space Hellas proposed the relocation of the servers from the (slow) Token Ring to the Fast Ethernet, without effecting any changes to IP addressing. With this change the demanding users and corresponding servers will come under the fast sub-network.

In addition, a core multi-layer switch was used. This switch does not cause any delays and, at the same time, supports Virtual LANs (VLANs). Following a survey of the demanding users, Space Hellas proposed to set up 2 VLANs to prevent broadcasting among these users.

For the linking of the two client buildings, Space Hellas proposed a wireless optical laser link. The desired deliverable was an unobstructed optical link between the 2 buildings. This laser link performs like a typical wire link but cuts down on costs relating to leased lines use and infrastructure (digging channels, etc.)

The main multi-layer switch was a Catalyst family product of Cisco Systems. The two buildings were linked using an MRV wireless laser technology. This is a reliable solution fostering a Fast Ethernet connection (100 Mbps) between the two points.
