Data network to support the World Athletics Championship, “Athens ‘97”
|
Brief Description of the Project
Space Hellas , in co-operation with COMSYS LTD, was contracted the implementation of a data network to support of the World Athletics Championship “Athens ‘97”. The network provided coverage to all sports fields, i.e. OAKA, Panatheneum Stadium and the Marathon Run, including hotels hosting athletes, escorts and support personnel . Space Hellas provided the following services:
- Design of the active and passive network, in compliance with IAAF track specifications
- Procurement and installation of equipment
- Testing for smooth operation
- Training of operators
- 24-hour system support during the games at short response times
This was a very particular project as it had to comply with strict IAAF specifications; required the co-operation of numerous public and private entities during the phase of implementation, while the type of application was such that the network had to maintain uninterrupted operation. It is noteworthy that all official results and data required for the coverage of all sports events by the Media were resourced from this network's services. This explains why the design of the network and the components chosen had to comply with high availability requirements.
From a technological perspective the network utilized a TCP / IP environment, using Token Ring technology for the local area network.
The network equipment is manufactured by VMS (ex-Motorola), RAD Data Communications and Madge.
