As part of the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) 2007 -2013 and the Operational Programme “Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship” (OPCE ΙΙ), Space Hellas participates in the development project “eCall” that deals with the application of the European in-vehicle automated emergency call system (eCall). The project, which also involves the Institute of Communications & Computer Systems (ICCS) as coordinator, and Cosmote, has a total budget of 417,837 euro and is co-financed by the National Action “Cooperation”.
Through the development of a national eCall pilot system, the project intends to prepare Greece for the implementation of the system, which will be mandatory for all EU countries by 2014. The aim of the eCall system is the automated alerting for a car accident, anywhere in Europe, with the same technical standards and the same quality of service through a mobile network and the use of the single pan-European emergency call number 112. The use of the in-vehicle emergency call to deploy emergency assistance will save lives and reduce the social burden of road accidents by improving the notification of such accidents, speeding up the emergency service response and lowering the subsequent effects on fatalities, severity of injuries and traffic flows.
In the context of the project, Space Hellas is in charge of the design, development and pilot application of the “Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP)”, which is one of the main sub-systems of the eCall system. The PSAP receives, manages and assesses the incoming calls, and subsequently performs the appropriate actions. Additionally, it allows for the immediate localisation of the accident, vehicle identification and visualisation of all related information in a Geographic Information System (GIS).
Space Hellas is actively engaged in R&D, at both European and National Level, boasting several successful projects, and possessing an extensive international network of co-operations from the industry and academia. Recognising the importance of knowledge in highly specialised areas of science and technology, Space Hellas takes advantage of the technological achievements and new opportunities to create innovative solutions and services to offer to its customers.
