Brief Description of the Project

In 2002 Space Hellas was assigned the development of a network infrastructure for voice and data communication, as well as the infrastructure for TV and Mini Bar services for the Hilton Athens hotel under construction.

The development of the network involved quality materials and components, installed in hotel rooms, suites and administration areas. Twisted copper cables ended at individual distribution frames for easy network management.

For the backbone data network we utilized Cisco Systems switches, in particular of the Catalyst 2950 and 4500 families. The standardized Fast Ethernet Cisco Catalyst 2950 switches offer excellent performance and functionality in LANs. These 10/100 Mbps autosensing switches provide improved QoS (Quality of Service) and multicast traffic management through the user-friendly Cisco Cluster Management Suite (CMS) and Cisco IOS Software. The Catalyst 2950 version for Gigabit application over copper wires with uplinks of 10/100/1000 Base T offers Medium-Sized Enterprises an ideal solution for changing over from the Fast Ethernet to the higher performance Gigabit Ethernet backbone network using the existing class 5 wiring.

The Cisco Catalyst 4500 series offers non-blocking switching levels 2/3/4 with increased redundancy and, furthermore, enhances the control over unified networks. The unified, high availability data/video/voice networks offer redundancy for business applications based on the Internet. The particular series is based on Cisco Catalyst 4000 next generation platform series and includes three new Cisco Catalyst chassis: Cisco Catalyst 4507R (7 slots), Cisco Catalyst (6 slots) and Cisco Catalyst 4503 (3 slots).

For the Hilton network we utilized the Catalyst 4507R model whose unified redundancy improvements, of the Cisco Catalyst 4500 series, offer 1+1 redundant Supervisor Engine, inline power for IP telephony, software based error tolerance and 1+1 redundant power supply. The improved redundancy in the hardware and software minimize network idleness and enhance productivity, profit and customer satisfaction.

Space Hellas procured, installed and currently supports a state-of-the-art Alcatel OmniPCX Enterprise Ux telephone exchange for the Athens Hilton. The particular telephone exchange offers high availability as all its basic components, CPU and supply arrays are capable of redundancy. This ensures uninterrupted system operation in the event of a technical problem or damage.

The Athens Hilton is highly demanding when it comes to customer service. Its call center, staffed with 20 agents and 2 supervisors, is in operation 24 hours a day to support 1,800 rooms, suites and halls.

Using 95 DECT antennas and 106 wireless phone sets (Alcatel Mobile 200), the hotel meets staffs' cordless communication needs indoor and outdoor the hotel, and those of customers who need to place or answer a call when in the pool or bar area.

Finally, the OmniPCX Enterprise Ux is connected to the hotels Back-Office application, which is used for the management of the hotel's telephone exchange.
